Here we are the last day of November.
The Great Slave 200 is approaching quickly. We have ramped up the milage the last couple of weeks, The dogs are running 50's easily. After the race we will do some 100+ mile runs, trying to kick some dogs out of the training. I have not had much success in eliminating anyone yet , But I'm confident that I will get down to a reasonable number of dogs at some point. All the dogs are doing great, We have been able to do some old school mushing- running on the big lake with no trail. - Perhaps the ultimate bonding experience-connecting with the team to get them to run to no where... white expanse, no trail, I know some dogs will try to turn the team back the direction they came.. Its a great time , and really fun to run the dogs. I am headed out today for a fun run, we're going to go exploring. It brings me back many years ago..about 20? when I started mushing with my best friend Marcel, heading out after school, sometimes skipping school on a beautiful early winter or spring day in Rankin Inlet, camping out, checking our traps or Caribou hunting.
P.S-
Rankin is located on the western side of Hudson bay, in Canada's arctic, above the tree line and ever present wind, and mulitple day blizzards were the norm growing up. Adverse conditions should expected in the Iditarod, a steady frame of mind and experiance in horrible weather is a big asset.
Good Times..
