Warren Scratches in Galena

I am not sure what to write to you all to be able to explain how difficult a decision it is to scratch from the Iditarod. It is a decision that Warren made earlier this evening. He had called me a little after six tonight to discuss it. It is definitely not a decision that he made lightly. To be totally honest, I am not sure when he called if he was looking for a pep talk or for support, maybe just a friend to talk to. I tried to offer him all of those. Because I know him, he is not a quitter at anything he sets his mind to, I wanted to be sure that this is not a decision that will come to haunt him. I don’t feel that this will be the case. He has made the decision in the best interest of the future of our dog team.

In talking with him he was really weighing all the options and all the scenarios that could play out for the rest of the race. Warren has completed this epic race three times and running it now is not just about completing it, it is about having a competitive dog team. The team this year was quite a young one. Many of those young ones are still out there with him. But he would have been leaving Galena with only 9 dogs. Not ideal, doable yes, but with such young dogs, would it really be worth it? He has decided not and I fully support his decision. He was concerned with disappointing all of you wonderful folks who support him and our kennel. I reminded him that many of you support us so much because you know that for us the dogs come first and that no one will fault him for making his decision in the best interest of the team, this years and the future teams that they will be a part of.

When he had called me from his 24 in McGrath, he was a bit bummed with how the race had changed for him in just one run. Loading three of our biggest dogs on the run to Nikolai, such an already challenging trail, was not an easy task and it slowed him considerably. Then to end up 24ing in McGrath where most mushers there were struggling with their own issues with their teams was not a great place to be. But he regrouped and did some good runs into Ophir. He already knew he had fallen behind the top of the pack but had decided to get back in the game with a lot of miles to go. I applaud him for that.

I also am so proud of that young team of dogs. They are all superstars to me and will be treated accordingly when they return to our dog truck as will Warren.

I don’t know any specifics yet as to when he will be returning with the team but will keep you all posted.

Thank you for all your support.

K

Congratulations to Warren and the dogs for all they've accomplished. No doubt it was a heart-wrenching decision to scratch, but it's an honourable and admirable thing to do when your utmost concern is the welfare of the dogs. Well done, Warren.

Am crying as I read about Warren scratching. I know how dissapointing this is for Warren and everyone who makes this race possible for him. We have gained so much respect for Warren in the short time we have known him and realize how hard he works at something and that the last thing he is is a quitter. We totally support his decision because we know it would have been the right one to make.

Way to go Warren. There is always next year.

We're proud of you. Too bad about the scratch. Looks like everybody was dropping lots of dogs this year. Time to start preparing for next year. See you at the Wyoming race.

Chin up Warren...Cliff and I support you because of your love for the sport, and your intense love of your dogs. It takes a big person to put the consideration of his team before their own goals. We all know you can do this race, and this years dogs will be all the more experienced for the next time. Not an easy decision, but because of the reasons for your decision, that is what makes you a winner! PEACE

I comend you Warren for race you just ran. You did a great job!!! I know your decision to scratch was a hard one but I also know that you were thinking of the dogs and their health and safety, as much as you wanted to win/place in the top 10 you put your dogs first, to me this shows the love and dedication to your animals and unselfishness not to push them when they had enough. You did what was RIGHT! In the long run the team and you will be ahead, there are always more races to run and you will reach your goals without sacraficing your dogs. Im very proud of you and all you have accomplished!

As for you Kate, Warren is lucky to have such a loving careing lady in his life! You did a great job in training and caring for the team as well as supporting Warren in his racing.

Love to you both!

Hi Kate and Warren
I'm sure it was a tough decision - the only thing that's important is that it's the right decision, and there's no doubt it was because nobody knows your dogs better than you do! Look forward to having you back in Quesnel, bye for now, Judy.

Warren and Kate:

It must have been so difficult to make the decision to scratch. Warren, your mother told us how determined (stubborn?) you are when it comes to completing what you start. However we also know just how much you care about your animals, and your decision along with Kate's sensitive and understanding support demonstates this wonderfully. We have really enjoyed following your journey to this year's Iditarod, thank you for sharing it with us.....but we are really looking forward to welcoming you home!

So sorry to hear that Warren had to make such a difficult decision. I'm headed to Nome Tuesday and will be sad not to see both your shining faces there! Best wishes with getting the team safely home, and I hope to see you guys and all the happy doggles next year.
