Road trip
Well, here we are on day two of driving to Alaska. We left Montana yesterday morning around 11am. Weather was clear, very unlike the last time we left for Iditarod 2006 when we were in the middle of a huge storm and we, well actually Doug, had to plow out the driveway, about ½ mile long. As soon as he finished we all had to jump in the trucks and hope we would be able to make it out the driveway before the storm closed it again. This time we just drove out, abit anticlimactic in comparison. We both felt glad to be hitting the road although for me at least my two days in Lincoln was way too short.

We made it to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta yesterday, arriving around 11pm. We have found a great spot behind a community center there that is always empty and a great place to free drop the dogs. Especially when we are on the road we like to let the dogs out to stretch their legs as much as possible. It is also a tool we use to make sure everyone is feeling good, especially after Thursday’s 140 mile run, it is key for us to watch the dogs moving. Happy to report all are looking good overall. With the exception of one of our dogs who lost her free running status yesterday during on of our other drops in Fort Macleod when she went on a walkabout and suddenly forgot her name, all of the dogs are good loose droppers. She is good at home but obviously the excitement of the road is a bit much for her.

We hit the road this morning abit later than planned as we both overslept in our cozy camper. It may well be the last good long sleep we get for awhile! We fed the dogs and let everyone stretch their legs abit, I worked on feet and massaged a few dogs, another tool we use daily to check out dogs. The drive so far today has been good, good weather, no moose along “moose row” in Alberta. We stopped for dinner at the White Spot in Dawson City and are now a few hundred kilometers further along the road as I write. Not sure yet where we will stop for the night. We are aiming to be in Whitehorse tomorrow evening. We will stop there briefly to pick up more FirstMate dog food and then continue on to Alaska.

More later,
Kate
